Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Obesity has been declared a public health emergency. Just weeks ago we learned that if current trends continue, more Americans will be dying of obesity than from smoking. In the never-ending battle to shed pounds.DIET options are expanding as quickly as waistlines. 17-million Amercans are estimated to have tried a low-carb diet within the past year. But, do these Diets work? Tonight, we offer some food for thought. |

When it comes to the battle of the bulge we're losing. Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions. Here in New Hampshire, 56% of adults are overweight, nearly 18-percent are obese. Those who track eating trends say 1/4 of the population is always on a diet. That hasn't changed in 20 years, only the DIET - Why are people always on diets.cause they approach diets as something they'll be for a short period of time. I can stand this for a month as long as I lose weight. Not going to be successful because eating is something we have to do every single day numerous times a day. As Dieters look for a quick fix, -- Marketers cater to the craze du jour -- and, right now it's a low-carb, hi-protein diet. At the Food Co-Op in Hanover -and all over -- store shelves are being filled with reduced carbohydrate products-all to keep up with America's latest diet obsession. Is it the so beach diet driving all this, and the atkins diet.yes. I've never seen this kind of proliferation of products before. So, we can expect to see more of these products in days ahead. 1 Cheri White: Just today I read that Manchester had yanked soda vending machines out of their schools. Can you give us a big picture view as to what's happening in the state when it comes to school vending machines.? 2 Chuck Ott: We know that NH schools are starved for funding. Soda vending machines can bring in much needed cash to school systems. Give us a reality check on what schools would be losing if they ditch vending machines? 3 Chuck Ott: Don't revenues from Snacks and Soda -- pay for extracurricular activities . Isn't it a balancing act for schools--looking to give kids as many benefits as they can? 4 Tim Goosens: You're in charge of the menu in Laconia Schools. Tell us what you've done -- with an eye towards helping kids slim down? 4 Tim Goosens: Give us an example of an OLD menu --and the new and improved Menu? What's the reaction been from students? 5 Cheri White: The Soft drink and Soda Industry argues that STUDENTS have a right to CHOOSE their beverages and snacks -- and schools should stick to instructing students about Healthy Lifestyles? What do say to that argument? 6 Superintendent Ott: Studies show that 20-years ago kids were drinking TWICE as much MILK as they were soda --Now, teens down 2 soft drinks for every glass of milk. Is it true that Vending machines that sell Milk can't pay schools as much as the SODA industry can? 7 Cheri White: The soft drink & soda industry say their products can be part of a healthy diet. They say their machines offer water and sports drinks -- not just carbonated beverages? Shouldn't Kids have a CHOICE? If you put fruit in a vending machine -- would it SELL? 8 Tim Goossens: Isn't this all about companies wanting to have brand name indoctri-nation -- so kids use their products for a lifetime? And, is that BAD? SOME NEW INITIATIVES -- INVOLVING VENDING MACHINES WITH HEALTHY FOODS WILL GET UNDERWAY NEXT MONTH IN NH. WE'LL HAVE MORE ON THAT IN THE DAYS AHAD. |
